How-to jailbreak iPhone iOS 4.0 using limera1n.
Limera1n is jailbreak utility created by geohot.

How-to jailbreak iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad running iOS 4.0 firmware using limera1n jailbreak utility.

First, make sure that you have iOS 4.0 installed on your iPhone. (see: Check iOS firmware version)

This is untethered jailbreak.
This is tutorial for Mac users (Windows users read: How-to Jailbreak iPhone iOS 4.0 using limera1n on Mac)
This jailbreak will hacktivate your iPhone.

Required stuffs:
limera1n.zip

• Go to limera1n.com or limera1n download page on senseiphone then download limera1n.zip to your computer. Put it on your Desktop or anywhere else which you can easily remember. I will put mine on Desktop in this tutorial.
• Double click limera1n.zip file from the desktop to extract the application, then double click it to launch limera1n.

  

• Once limera1n opened, you will see a big “make it ra1n” button. That make it ra1n button means start. Click make it ra1n button to start jailbreak.

  

• limera1n will be “waiting for device” if you haven’t plug the iPhone or the Windows may be unable to detect the iPhone. So, please plug the device into the computer if you haven’t done so.

  

• If the iPhone has been plugged in and detected, limera1n will automatically put the device into recovery mode.

  

• Wait for a few minutes until your device has entered recovery mode indicated by “connect to iTunes logo” on the iPhone screen. If you have entered recovery mode, limera1n will guide you to enter the iPhone into DFU mode.

  

• If you have already know how-to enter DFU mode, this step should be easy for you.
  If you don’t know how-to enter DFU mode yet, follow this step carefully.

  Enter DFU mode

  • Hold together home and power button on your iPhone.
    
  • When it says “release power button”, you should have release it immediately.
    
  • Now just keep holding the home button until limera1n says: “in DFU mode… wait“.
    
• When you have successfully entered DFU mode, you can take your hands off the iPhone and the computer as well and let the limera1n doing its job, exploiting, jailbreaking, and done.
• Once limera1n has done and you see this pop-up alert, turn on your device and enjoy the jailbreak.
  

You have successfully jailbreak iPhone with iOS 4.0 running by using limera1n, but you don’t have Cydia installed yet.

Installing cydia

• Open limera1n app on iPhone. limera1n icon may be white or blank, not as it should be. But that’s fine.
  
• Select Cydia then tap Install button (top right corner)
  
• Please wait while cydia is being downloaded.
  
• Once finished, you should see Cydia app on the Homescreen of your iPhone.
