Tethered jailbreak is the reserve of untethered jailbreak. You will need to connect the iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad into the computer to run the specified program in order to boot-up your device. You have to do this every time device reboots, either due to battery drain, or normal reboot process on the device. You can’t turn the device on without computer’s help or being stuck on Apple logo mostly.

By using the program on the computer, the device will be able to boot up because there is a way to execute code via USB that allows you to bootstrap to a pwned (no signature check) iBSS, iBEC, or iBoot to finish the boot process. That’s a bit technical explanation.

A tethered jailbreak mostly exist on earlier release of the jailbreak utility.
